Morningside will be closing down for winter the end of next week.
Doug and I will be heading back to North Carolina.
If you have any gliders or gear and don't want them locked up please come get it before the 27th of November. You can also settle up on storage and keep it here 'till spring. The Hanger and all buildings will be closed and locked until spring.

Glider storage is $20 a month.

There are a few more good flying days 'till close. Morningside will re-open in April 2012. Thank you for all your support hope to see you before the 27th.

Reminder Paul Voight and Ryan Voight are hosting Landing Clinic here at Morningside. Sat & Sun Oct. 15th-16th

Pilots who intend to participate should be waivered with Morningside.

Pilots meeting will be held @ 8:30 am at the Morningside headquarters.

The clinic CAN/WILL be held regardless of weather.

Weather permitting, pilots will fly…. the landings will be video’d… and video analysis and classroom will fill out each days schedule.

There is also a large archive of landing technique footage in Ryan’s bag of tricks in case we are grounded for any period of time.

Cost is $90 / pilot, which does not include Morningside fees (ATV rides up….etc).

Morningside Columbus Day Memorial October 8th and 9th
Morningside’s Annual get-together near the end of the season this year to remember: Jeff Nicolay, Phil Haines, and other significant Pilots of Morningside’s History.
There will be flying, live music and pot luck dinner.
There will also be a distance contest, (who can fly the farthest off the 250’ launch), and a spot landing contest. Includes both and hang gliders and paragliders. Will run similar to the hang gliding Spectacular.
Bring your glider and see how far it will go and show off your landing skills, or come and watch others try.

Just finished this video for one of my 3D Animation class. I probably spent just as much time in Aftereffects as in Maya but it was a fun project to learn with and it's just a step in to what is possible when you have the time and tools to make up stuff.

The news reel is a true reel about a true giant bird sighting, and the cave drawing and many Pterosaur bones were found in Utah so... It could happen.

I'd made wedding video and the whole thing was about 20 min long and I wanted to make a shorter version that would be better for sharing with family and friends over the internet and things. I thought since I'm in a bunch of multimedia class and have all access to lots of software I'd do an experiment. I cut it down to the basics and then tried to give a home movie 8mm look. I don't have my own computer so the whole project was moved from one machine to another both PC's and Macs. It's still not exactly what I was going for but still turned out good. I learned a lot in the process and hopefully one day I'll have my own tools.

It was shot using a a Flip and GoPro, edited with/through: Streamclip, FCP, Vegas Pro, and WMML,

On the first day this month it had finally gotten pretty warm here but today we woke up to snow. Enough to shovel, like it was winter all over again. Hopefully it's the last big snow storm, an april fools from nature. I think this year we're goimg to skip spring and go straight to summer.
I've been busy in school anyway. Only a few weeks left, I've got a trial version of After Effects to help with final assignments. To re-learn it and and some new tricks a put together a quick video using some timelapse footage I have from las fall. enjoy.

My bother has been working on Jeeps for a few years now. He's proabably done the most work to this one and will still do a lot more. He'd just gotten it road ready and we went up into the foot his earlier. We tested out the wench and everything seemed to be good. A freind invited him to go mudding with him down by the lake.

We found out later that his 4 wheel drive never engaged and all the anti-freeze leaked out. Since then he has fixed that, Added custom fender flairs, got a new starter motor, and added 6 spot light. The seats are still moist and still needs a Hang glider rack.

It's a new year. It's been a while since I've actually written anything on here. I have a lot of catching up to do. A lot happened last year. I don't think I could even really begin to write all that happened, and I don't think I have to. It was all unforgettable. I do have pictures though, that I should probably share.

I am back in school now. Last semester I kept pretty busy and already this semester it's consuming my life. If things work out though I'll be done in spring. Then who knows what I'll be doing.... besides flying.

It took me long enough. I had lots of footage but didn't want to make it too long. It was supposed to more like a teaser and I was only going to use one audio track. I couldn't decide which track I liked better so I used both so it came out more like two videos in one. Don't know if the audio will get removed or not so enjoy while you can.
Recorded all videos with a GoPro HD. I love this camera, my first one is at the bottom of the lake but thanks to very good people in my life I got a new one as a gift. Thank you again. It was all edited together with imovie (the old one). It's limiting but it gets the job done.

Timp has started to get snow on it but nothing is really sticking. It probably wont get too cold till late November but fall is definitely full on now. The air is colder but good for calm soaring. I need to get up to the Point more often. I just took the rack off the jeep and it is for sale now. I'll have rig another vehicle for flying soon.

last week was incredible. I've been trying to take pics of June training and should have a post for it soon, but last week flying was good every single day. Sunday through wendsday there was soaring at the beach, Monday morning I got my but kicked trying to soar the eaglet, the next day was good and a group of old instructors were on the ridge. Bagbee and Jon were soaring together at the sametime. On Wendsday I got up made several passes on Jockeys Ridge in the eaglet 191, It was hard work but fun, I toplanded once (mostly 'cause I was flying backwards) it was cool, then we taught kite board instructors for June training. Then that night a group of traveled to Lookout Mountain and had amazing flying everyday. I'll post the whole story later, we just got back this morning at like 3 am. Now we've got to go back to work teaching Hang Gliding. 80D

May 9 2009,
I quit my job today. I wasn't going to do much but when I saw how the weather was after work I decided to load my kite and head to quest. I wasn't sure if there would be anyone in town to tow because of the Rally but lucky for me they were having the last days of the comp here. So there were plenty of tugs and lots of people. All the competing pilots had already left and no one was sure they were going to make it back, but there were still a handful of gliders close by. I set up and discovered I forgot to put the batteries to my vario back in so I went ahead and flew the old fashioned way. Paul pulled my up and it was a bit rowdy coming out of the field but there wasn't too much lift up high. It was there just not as big and strong as before I guess. I thought He'd let my off in lift like last week so I started turnng but wasn't in lift. I looked back over the field and saw Paul turning and going up a little in the tug and went over to him. Bobby was gliding around in his tug too. I got over the west end of the field and found a vulture, or he found me and we both went up a little. I actually was doing better with s-turns than with 360s. I was going up barely and then the bird left and so did the lift. I scratched around for a little bit more, two ultralights flew in and landed and then I did.
As I Broke down I looked up and saw two kites zooming in. Jeff OB and Johnny made it back and I assume won the day. Jeff Shapiro and another also made it back a little bit after. We actually saw Zippy before them but he landed about a kilometer short. We all watched as he disapeared behind the trees to the north. When I found out it was him I drove over to see if he needed a ride and to see how he'd react to seeing an old student from Utah. I loaded and brought back his glider to Quest. I was surprised how light it was for a high performance glider. All the other pilots who'd landed out were getting back and the party was starting when I left. It was a good day.

May 2 2009,
Most everyone was down at the Florida Ridge at the comp. Jim and Paul were here to tow and one othe girl to fly. As I set up to launch a glider came in from the Ranch. On tow we passed two more, it was about 3 or so but there was still some really strong lift, I let off and started turning all the way to Cloud base. I was mostly going by feel becasue my vario wasn't making any noise, but it did read 5700 something ft. when everything started going grey. I'd never been to the bottom of a cloud before so I got excited and dived down to see better then pulled out my camera. I didn't take too many good pics but worse I wasn't looking for the next elevator. I turned off and then on my vario and it started singing all sorts of songs. The air didn't feel wild but the vario was going nuts. I finally realized there must be something wrong after I'd lost 1000 ft turning in sink. I landed and Jim hooked me up with some new Batteries and Paul yanked me up again. There was very light wind out of the south and more pilots were coming in from the Ranch. I never found good lift again and floated back to quest. did some wing overs and had a clean landing. (thankfully 'cause everyone was watching)
I got a call from kitty Hawk and they said they will have a place for me. I'll probably work one more week and then quit so I can make it up there in time for the Spectacular. I'm going to miss out on the Rally which would have been fun. maybe one day I'll try to fly Lookout, but I'd better work while I've got work. I'm sure the flying is starting to get very good back west and I hope my Dad is getting some air time now.

I got two flights in yesterday. It was windy (again) but I flew anyway. the first flight was bumpy but it lasted a litle longer than a sled ride. and then later a pilot from russia was going to do her first aero tow with her glider so I went ahead an went up again to enjoy the smooth wind. I got parked over the south end of the field and pretty much stayed in one spot like floating in laminar air at the south side. I had swithed my hang point so I was doing some stalls and seeing how much different the glider felt. I thought something was a little bit funny going right versus right but figured it must just be the wind.

When I pulled the battons out the one at the tip was a little bit modified. I'm pretty sure I did this on the ground while I was trying to cart the glider across the field. Rhet helped me bend it straight again ( he's got a lot of experience and a good eye for it). So it's good to go again. Hopefully I'll be out again next week but I think everyone else is going to start leaving for comps and stuff. I might be done with work too so maybe I'll hit the road too. I don't know.

It's been a while since I've uploaded anything. Weather is looking good here (a lot better than Utah anyway, I hear it's still snowing there) I flown a bit but not as much as I'd like to. I got my aerotow signed off by Dustin and have been flying my kite. I've only been able to fly Saturdays in the afternoon because of work. I work six days a week 10 hours a day except Saturday. so mostly all I've had are sled rides at the end of the day. I still haven't had a flight with good thermalling but weather is getting even better so maybe soon I'll get in a longer flight. Last weekend was windy but I had friday and Saturday off for the Holiday so I got 4 tows. Just getting towed up is fun I think, but also challenging 'cause I get so focused once I get off I'm still tense and wanting to go fast. My falcon is so much slower than everyone elses glider but I don't care. I noticed that there is no slack in my second hang strap (I've been using my safty as my main hang strap but it streches) so I need to switch them and then I'll probably fly even slower. I just want to get as much air time as I can.

While I was waiting for the wind to die down I watched some swallow tailed kites playing out over the run way. they're beautiful birds and incredible gliders. there's one in the distance above my king post.

April 4: Last day of Demo Days at wallaby ranch. I'd never seen so many gliders launch from one spot so fast, there were 4 tugs going and hundreds of people.

I met Jim and Johnny, and Rhet, and the other locals about two weeks ago, they did a great job teaching me to aerotow. The first day was too windy but we did some ground school, learning what to do, going over different situations, hang checks, and tow checks, we rigged my harness. We also went over tieing weak links it was all good. The next time we got 4 tandems flights in the the morning. Rhet had us playing chase the ace and I got a heck of a work out. I learned a lot fast. We practiced getting out side, inside, high , low and in the prop-wash, and getting back in position. The next day we did two more tandems, one high release and more practices and then a simulated weak link brake at about 600 ft. then I got to solo. Jim realesed me at about 4200 ft, it was soo nice. the air was cool, calm and very light breeze, ideal for learning. I can't wait to go back and start flying later in the day and getting better. I think I still need to take a written test to be all passed off. I'm still looking for work and have no idea how long I'll be here, but while I'm here I want to get up as much as possible.

2 flights on the South side, just me and my Dad. A potty pilot showed up near sunset but didn't stay up long. I got about 2 hours of air time. There was lots of snow but the cold really wasn't bad at all.

It's cold outside and there's too much snow to drive up to launch. We got the Snowmobiles running maybe we'll do some sled rides this weekend. Today I got bored and was going through my hard drive and found all these images I'd made a while a go. Some are actually a few years old now and I don't know why I've been keeping them hidden. So I've decided to post most of them, some I guess could be called art or design work, or maybe even propaganda. Whatever, i don't care what you call 'em, they were fun to make maybe I'll make some more in the future. Anyway enjoy- 8OD

This may be the last flight we get in this year from inspo. Again, they were just sled rides. we were able to stay up a bit longer over the lz, my dad more than me. I think we should have waited at least a half hour longer. oh well. I'm feeling more confident flying here and it really is very convenient to be able to take off and land so close to home. we left a tie down up at launch so we have to go up and get it, maybe we'll get one more flight in.

This day I went by myself. So I parked my car on the road because i didn't want to leave it up on launch just in case the ranger or vandels came across it. I wasn't sure how long it would stay up there. So i had to Hike with the glider and my harness up to launch. it took about 320 min with some resting, not too bad. It's a good thing my kite is just a light falcon. conditions were pretty good and maybe i took off too soon because it ended up being just a sled ride but I had a much nicer landing. My sister drove me up later to retrieve the jeep so everything worked out well.

I got a cop called on us this day too. I did a couple wing overs over the intersection and then did a down wind landing. So it must of looked like I was out of control and crashed because my landing was so fast. (I was fine but the wheels probably saved me 'cuase I couldn't run fast enough). Someone on the bench saw and called the Police, an officer showed up but he was really nice and just wanted to make sure we were ok. So no problems with landing in this field, but we should try and clean it up some and make it even nicer.

Today I got to go up, I skipped my last two classes and my dad was still home so we loaded our gliders and my sister and our friend,and dog came along. There was almost no one down in the valley but up on launch it was pretty windy. almost too windy to set up, I almost didn't want to take off, my dad didn't, but then it mellowed out a little and I was ready. I took off and tried to ridge soar but it was pretty messy and actually more cross from the south than it looked. I gave up and headed out to the LZ because I knew I was going to have to worry about penetrating and didn't want to waste any air in squierly turns. I pretty much crabed all the way out to the LZ, I had less Altitude than the other day but still plenty to set up and land going south. It worked out well, Hit my spot and another good flaired landing. I was surprised how windy it was up top compared to the valley, I didn't like it, I did turn a little bit in lift but I was driffting so far and fast down wind that I didn't fight too hard for it. My Dad adn I went up again but when I opened my bag I discovered that my battons were missing. I'd left them in the LZ from last week. So only my dad got to fly this time. I guess it's fair because last time I did and he didn't. He also had just a sled ride. When we got down to the LZ my battons were there but my brother had left his I pod back at launch. I had to work saturday but my Dad went back up adn they found the Ipod and he had a good flight, he got up to 9,000 ft and stayed up almost an hour. The toyota has great clearance but we're not sure it's better than the Jeep. In any case both get us there and that's what counts.

We went off road again and made a new attempt to launch from the upper inspiration. I call it inspiracion (spanish). I was a little bit nevous because the last time I'd come up short and landed in a horse field but now that field has an electric fence down the middle of it. It was late and I didn't take off 'til about 6:30 It was really calm smooth air, I made it over the LZ with a a thousand feet to spare, I was very relieved and had a smooth landing. My dad didn't fare so well, as soon as he was ready the wind died. He waited but then it started to blow down, so he had to fold up and drive down. then he got a flat tire which he had to change in the dark. Nice thing about the Jeep is it's a full size spare. We made it home about 8:30. It's sketchy, but som nice to be able to fly so close to home.

We both pretty much had sled rides, but it was fun. I flew with out wheels again, but had a really sloppy landing and lightly beaked it. so the wheels are going back on. my sister and friends got a lot more pics and some video.

we went out to the south side, it was looking kinda sketchy but we went for it anyway. I actually got in two flights. both landing at the bottom. I had to hike back up with a cross from the left and boy was that a work out. but it was good to get some air time but we should ha e tried camels the day before.

Last saturday I had the best flight of my life so far. At the same place I had the worst flight of my life. we went down to Levan to help my grandpa stack some hay and had the gliders. We arrived at launch and found John, Liz and and Steve the bird man, setting up. I took off first just before 5. I didn't really care about getting up that day I just wanted to land out where I was supposed to and have a good glide. of course if I found any lift I'd take it. I found something that brought me back over launch and the wind was just strong enough to ridge soar a litte. my dad took off and we both went looking for lift, we got low, I was lower and about ready to give up and head to the lz and then out of the blue I hooked in too something sweet. It was small but going up at 6 fpm, it took me above the towers at about 9k. It was the highest I'd ever been. I got to ridge soar and find little pockets here and there staying above 7k. I watched everyone take off and kept an eye out to see if anyone would find something strong. I watched liz, my dad and then John land, and thought maybe the day was over. I was still pretty high and could see steve heading out to land, then the next time I looked he was circling up and fast, I went straight for him and it was a nice big smooth thermal. we were cranking around trying to find the core, and we got all the way to 11k almost 12. That is the highest I've ever gotten, it was sweet. It was the also the first time I ever shared a thermal with someone, it was a little bit nevrving watching steve zoom around me, I was of course slower and could turn tighter so steve was doing big circles around me. I got above him and enjoyed the air as long as I could. I landed last at 7:15 with the setting of the sun. It was the best flight ever, mostly because I out flew my dad for the first time ever. I want to do it again.

It Turned out to be a great day, we were able to rigde soar together in front of launch for a little while, I finally got to low and then went through heavy sink all the way to the LZ. my dad got up and as I landed he made his way to provo. He had a great flight, saw tons of mountain goats on cascade and Timp, then landed at the Rock Canyon Elemetary fields at about 7:30. I was jelous but it all worked out well.

Thursday I went out and waited for the wind to straighten out before I set up. I took off a 5:50 and got up and to the back right away. It was my first time on the back rigde by myself, I was the second kite in the air and then Ryan took off after me. I watched the other two and tried to hone in to where they were getting lift. I followed them till I found something sweet and worked all the way up to 7100 ft. that was the highest I got for the day then I averaged between 6400 and 6600 for the until sunset. I landed at 8:30 and was the last HG on the ground. It was an ok landing but I would have prefered to be a little further back. I was in the air for 2 and half hours, my longest flight. I knew the northside could get good but that was the first time I really got to play with it.

The next day I went out again with my dad, we took of at about 4 a little earlier than before. The conditions wern't as strong but the cycles were still great. everyone else connected and made it to the back and up but I wasn't as lucky and had to land down below and then watch everyone else enjoy the sky. I mounted a camera but the trigger wasn't working so I only got this one shot in the air.

Saturday was supposed to get Over developed too, and it did, but we went to Camels early. We both took of after 1 pm. I didn't get up and had to work little bumps down low. The Lift was there and it wasn't too weak it was just so small and really hugging the terrain. My did did get up and above the ridge behind launch and then tried to make it out to the peak infront towards Provo, but going over the canyon he only found sink. before long he was as low as me trying to maintain. I was able to stay up for a half hour but it was tough. I think if we'd waited the thermals would have been bigger and and better. We wanted to get off the hill before the clouds got to close, one over spanish fork was a little bit threatning, across the valley and back behind toward indianola it was getting huge. over us it was blue until we landed. then some clouds started to form over launch and they got big enough to make a down draft we could feel in the Lz. so even though we could have had bigger flights it could also have gotten bad for us in the air. It was good to at least have a 30 min flight together and we got some practice using the radios.

Big Ugly Spider

My Dad wasn't feeling well and it was looking like it was going to over develope everywhere so we went out early to west mountain. The conditions were looking good like the forecast had said for a east launch. we debated for a while where the best launch would be we finally decided on the south end of the towers. I had a better Flight than I thought but I wonder if it hadn't gotten over developed over Payson and spanish it could have been better. I got up and above the towers and tried to stay in the sun but the cloud over payson was getting bigger. It eventually blocked out the light and I headed out to the Lz. I almost got as high as 7800 ft, which is the highest me or my dad have ever been over west mountain. After I folded up and we were headed back to spanish fork the a gust front started rolling through, which would have been nasty to land in, so even though it was only about a half our flight I'm glad I was on the ground before the air got messy. unfortunatly the camera died before I got airborne, I've made a camera mount for the glider but still havn't been able to use it.

We decided not to go camels because a big cloud was forming and moving over spanish fork toward sprinville. Inspo was out because I don't feel good flying there again and there was a fire behind cascade and my dad didn't want to bein the helicopters and planes way. So PG looked like the best bet as long as the south wind didn't blow the big clouds up that way. They didn't I took off first at about quarter to 5. I had a radio this day so my dad could coach me from the ground. He told me to 360 and I did a full circle in sink, so my flight was over, I had to land in a new hay field because our planned Lz would have been too much of a stretch.

I landed before my dad took off. the farmer came out and was very nice. I made sure I didn't walk all over his crop, or spook his horses, he only asked if I was ok, and if someone was coming to get me, and that was it.

My dad thought he would also have a short flight so he took off without a radio or cell phone. He also didn't have a vario because he let me use his. He got up above the ridge and he noticed that a cloud over saratoga had grown and was headed slowly our way. ( which was strange because it was a south wind and all the other clouds were drifting north east.) so he came out over the lz to land but said he was going up the whole time. He was in the cloud suck in front of the growing system. He could tell he was high enough to head over to timp, at that point me and my brother lost him and had no comunication. we drove to orem and then back to Pg looking at any field he could possibly land in.

Just after 7pm we got a phone call from him, he had landed at Rock Canyon Elemetry. we were pretty relieved because the sky over us was dark and ugly, and the cloud over springville was also bigger and the smoke from the fire was getting blown over pretty good. We got to my dad and he packed up while we watched lighting in the cloud coming from the north.

The Jeep was pretty much empty so we headed to get gas and as soon as we pulled out of the parking lot it began to rain. then it really came down. What a day, but what amazed me most was how my dad could get up and fly in such crazy air without having his vario. he also didn't where a jacket because he didn't think he'd get up. isn't that the way it always goes? we got the glider bags a little wet, had a nice dinner and called it a night. It's good to be able to fly again.

I got my new parts at about 12pm fro Ryan at wings over wasatch and then we heaeded up to Camels. I didn't take off until about 5pm and it was good for feeling the glider and making sure everything was ok. Everything felt right, no turns in the wings the stall speed felt the same all worked well. I did find and circle in thermal above the lz but after a few minutes I only gained about 1000 ft and then lost it. it was ok and I hada nice flight.

I took my dad to fly inspo last thursday and friday. Thursday he only had a sled ride. We got up there at about 3 and sat and watched a big cloud blow across the valley and over launch. he took off a about 5:30 and landed at the white church. it was good to try out the land cruiser and we learned that something is wrong with the radiator because it started to overheat. there's still a lot of work it needs but its nice to have it with the big lift now.

Friday He took off at about 4:30 and got up above cascade pretty quick. he got as high as 1300 and made a trip to camels and back. He landed at rock canyon elementry only a few minutes before 8:00. he had a great flight, saw lots of mountain goats and was too tired too fly the next day. I'm glad my dad is getting to fly more than he used to.

Last Flight of June

August 12 2008, Levan Ut. It was a sunny west, north west wind day. conditions were excelent, I had a strong launch, did some S turns out front and in no time I was soaring above launch. the wind was a little stronger than before, perfect for going backand forth alongthe rigde, I floated above the towers high enough to do some easy 360s. I could feel some lift every now and then and felt confident that I'd stay inthe air for a good while. I decided to head north along the ridge to see what I couod find hitting some good bumps along the way but not as strong as I thought they'd be. then I did find something so I started turning, I didn't realize it right away but I was drifting pretty quick every down wind turn and soon I was behind the ridge. i was still going up and getting closer to theupper towers so I did one more 360 and then the lift stopped. Either it drifted away with out me or I'd past it. In any case I was over the middle off the gully now and tried to get back out front to where I hoped the lift still was. It was'nt. In fact it was sink and then rotor, I could see that I wasn't going to make over the ridge, I thought maybe I should head out the canyon but I was going down fast and didn't know how far I would get. Then I thought with the altitude I still had left I could make the road on the ridge so I made a dashbut as I got closer I went down even faster so I turned away. I couldn't believe it. I wasn't going to make it. I realized I was going to have to crash. such a great day and I was trapped behind the ridge. I was so upset with myself for a tenth of a second and then it was like I went into auto pilot. I statrted looking for a clearing of any kind. top of a little hill, to far; fly on the wall on the back off the ridge, I would get slammed; another clearing, too small, too steep. I saw some gray trees that I thought looked small enough to tree top land and pretty flat. it was my last option so I set up going up hill and flared like I was going to land on the branches like a bird. The tip of the left wing connected first and I rotated almost 180 around it, closed my eyes and let go. when I opened my eyes I was hanging about 6 or 8 feet off the ground. I shouted first thing "I can't believe this" probably because I was amazed I was alive and not even scratched, and because I was stuck in a tree missing a great day to fly. I stood on the control bar and holding on to the right down tube unhooked and dropped to the ground. then to my knees to thank someone for keeping me alive. Then I wipped out my phone to call my Driver (my grandpa) that I was fine. Surprisingly I hasd great reception, must have been because of the towers. I walked out, and one of the neighbors who had come to watch was coming down the ridge to see that i was ok. We noticed that there were plenty of deer and elk tracks and then some bear tracks. we decided to come back later for the glider and cut down the trees to avoid damaging the sail. so the kite sat in the trees over night in bear country. I was in shook probably for 3 weeks because I couldn't believe I gotten myself in that situation and even more amazed (and grateful) that I walked away unscathed. The glider also suffered very little damage.

The Next day my Dad and brother drove down to help me recover the glider. As we hiked in we saw hundreds of big birds maybe vultures flying a ridge just east of where the glider was (going up of course). We walked in with a chain saw, hack saw, machete, and the glider bag. It took us about a half our to cut it down and pack it up. The only damage was a broken washout tube and some small scratches on the leading edges. One down tube was slightly bowed from be hanging on it to un hook and that straighted back out easy. It took us almost and hour to hike the glider out but we made it safe and sound. I've since inspected the glider several times for anything and it's fine. no kinks or bumps on the leading edges all the battens are good and equal. All the wires look good no fraing on the plastic sheath, nothing stretched. Its amazing and I couldn't be more grateful. I ordered a washout tube and some new nose wires also to keep the kite in good shape. So I wont try and fly it until I get the new tube, which was painful while living in levan and seeing launch every day for the rest of the month of june. better safe than sorry.

In april and May we made a few trips to West mountain, each time has pretty much just been a slide ride, we've also flown te south side, Camels, and My dad has made a couple flights off inspo. he's gotten over timp at least once now.
I also flew Inspo for the first time in the last week of May. Actually it wasn't the same launch as Inspo, we took the jeep up to a higher spot straight above little rock canyon. we had to knock over some dead trees and I did't actually take off until about 6 pm. There was little if no lift, but me with little experiences tried turning in any little but I could find until was above the foot hills and realized I might be in trouble. I was planning to land in the big field on university across from wills pit stop, but that was too far and I ended up making it in the field on canyon Rd, where 16 new homes will be next year. It was the first time I evergot nervous in the air and actually had tothink about bailing on a tiny hill, or water tank, or some street, but I flew though some bumps and made it in time to make one turn for aproach and had a clean landing with plenty of room if I'd needed it. It was really nice to only be a few blocks from home after breaking down, and a cool experience to fly over my own neighborhood. but I will be extra cautious the next time I ever fly there, I'd like to get up and high there but in a falcon there really is no room for error especially since where I did land wont be there much longer and I wont always be able to take off where I did. Still this flight wasn't as sketchy and sad as my very last flight. I'm still waiting for new washout tubes before I will get airborne again. I'll post the story of what happened soon.

LIVING BELOW HORSE HEAVEN

For the month of June I was living with my Grandpa in Levan Ut, helping him finish his cabin, building fences, staking hay and all sorts of ranch work. On occasion, when the weather was good I went flying. The first monday there I took off at about 3 pm, It was the first time I'd ever gotten above launch, in fact I did twice. It was a west south west day and really My first serious experince of good thermals. I took off and went straight out and toward the Lz, and as I got out in front I started to play in some weak lift over a small peak, I only thought I'd be able to maintain for a little while but the lift was getting better and i was getting better at staying in it and started to work up the hills, I started only to focus on the turns and keeping before I realized it I was back in front of launch, a little bit south almost over the canyon. I wasn't to comfortable being so far from the Lz so I headed back out and before I got there I hit something strong and started turning, The vario was beeping through the whole turn for the first time ever. my vario is old and probably not very accurate but it was reading between 200 and 300 fpm the whole time. It felt great and in no time I was above launch but again I was south and drifting up the canyon toward the next big peak between the towers and levan. If I hadmore experienceand confidence I would Have stayed in the lift and kept moving south. Instead I went back over the top of launch and could see that the clouds were starting to move a littlebit quicker from south to north and I was having to penetrate to get to the lz, but not losing to much air until a cloud drifted over and it felt like the sky shut down. the shadowed killed the light lift and maybe even made some sink but not too much. (it was the first time I'd ever experienced that) so I headed out to land happy and I learned a lot. I was pretty tired too, it was the longest I'd ever been in the air, it was only about an hour but I'd never fought and consentrated on thermaling like that before and it took a bit out of me. I landed in the middle of a herd of sheep, they moved just at the last minute and didn't seem to mind my arrival. It was a good flight and I learned a lot and built upmy confidence about flying there, maybe too much.

The next weekend someone told me a group of pilots were going to be headed down, I saw some kites setting up from town and decided to join them. I showed up last to find almost everyone set up already but with my falcon I was set up and ready to go pretty quick. The group was Liz, Shadd, John, Crazee Mike, and Dan and there drivers. I'd meet Shadd and Dan before in the inspo Lz and they'd given me the confidence to fly there. I ws glad to see them all.

I Took off first to be the wind dummy and to show those who had never flown there before whatthe glide looks like to build their confidence. (it is kind of a long glide for a single surface) The conditions were really light and we all probably took off too early, I tried to work little bumps off the the ridge out front just above the lz. I could maintain but nothing big came up, I saw liz coming out and decided to just land to be out of her way. It worked out good because the wind was south at the lz and it was north west when we took off (A cycle must have gone though or something becuase it didn't last) so she saw my aproach and followed, I had a very smooth no run landing and Liz also had a good clean landing except for the sage brush in her way.

Everyone else seemed to stay up longer but one by one came down except for Dan who did go cross country. He went south toward Lake Yuba but I packed up and left before I ever heard how far he got. I was happy to share the air with other HG pilots with more experience and get there feed back and advice. It was the last good landing I had in Levan that month.

Well my camera broke while ago so thats why I haven´t posted any new fotos, but I have been flying. On the 2nd we went to the northside, we tried to find a back road to the top of the North side but we didn´t make it. We did see some deer and a two point though. we had to drive around and got there pretty late. there were some other pilots up and plenty of bags floating around. We only set up my Falcon and my dad flew first and was able to top land just barely, then I took off but went straight down to land. The Lz looks pretty bad compared to what it was but Its alright.
The next week we tried to fly in heber, but we also got there too late. It took us a long time to find the right road we basicaly know that entire ridge now. the road up was pretty rough, we came down different one but we think it was a private road and were lucky the gate wasn´t locked. We´ll be ready next time to fly there.
On the 15th we soared camels, there was a steady south west west wind and it was very smooth. I stayed up about a half hour, I was able to stay above launch and even did a low 360 over the top, (which probably was abad idea but it was fun) my dad took off after me but also stayed up a good half hour. he landed after sunset, and we were tying our gliders down in the the dark. It was pretty cool to be able to get such a good flight in this late in the season, and have all the air to our selves. The next day we thought we try our luck again at inspiration. It was a calm day, a little warmer than the day before so I thought it would be good conditions for my first launch ever there. However we made it too late, as I was setting up the day shut down and wind was coming out the canyon. I guess I´ll have too wait till next year to fly Inspo.
On the 26 we made out to the northside, (late again) but this time we both got up, I stayed up for about 15 minutes and then found some lousy sink. I was the only one who landed below, oh well. my dad stayed up almost till sunset again he was one of the last to land. It was pretty cold I think If we fly any more this year I need to wear more clothes. I think we might be done though because the Jeep is in need of some work and our other Jeep too so we need to get these machines in good working order so that we´ll be ready for next season.

We went to work on a barn down in Levan and conditions were looking good so we took our Gliders.

The winds were light from the north, north west, ideal for launch.

It was a beautiful day but pretty cool so the thermals were small and soft but that was good for my first time there. I probably was only in the air ten minutes and my dad was up a little over 15, (he could work the little lift better than I could) but It was still a great flight. I think one of my best defenitly my most enjoyable this year. Both our landings were clean, and the and our driver even got there before my dad landed. I'm excited to come back on an active day and maybe even try to go some distance. there is Plenty o LZ down there, and the people have been kind to us so theres no stress about landing, Just focus on flying. So far this year i've Flown 4 mountain sites and 3 of them for the first time. Its kind of nice to have a pilot whos knows this valley and tons of spots for a Father. He actually got a sled ride in a Inspiration on tuesday, it maybe his last one before the snow piles up. Were both stoked and probably be at the point of the mountain now as things cool down.

This place is Flown very often, and isn't the easist to get to without 4 wheel drive, My Dad first Flew it back in th 80's, and then did it again for the first time about 6 months ago, these bones probably still had meat on them back then.

I Landed first, I did just another sled ride because I was worried about making it to the LZ. I had time to make only one turn to set my aproach and then I was on the ground.

When I landed every kid in the neighborhood came out to see, and we all watched my dad soar and then land. they were all pretty impressed. Heres my dad flaring in a south east wind.

We left one jeep in the LZ and had used it to retrieve the other, I almost rolled the little one, it was pretty fun. Defenitly an exciting afternoon, If You havn't noticed I'm not saying where we went. I will say It was my first flight there, and we took of in a south south west, but it would be much better in a stiff west but can also be flown in a north and north west. Today wasn't probably the best day for it, we almost broke down and headed to the south side, but since we had already left a jeep in the LZ and it was calm enough to make it we did it. It may be the last chance we get to fly a mountain site like this this year if its rainy and snowy every weekend now. It was worth it, My dad did find some good lift and got above launch and all without his Vario because he lent it to me. We wondered as we were breaking down if anyone else had ever landed in that field before, my dad landed in a closer one back before I was born but there are homes there now. The way people came out and looked at us made me wonder if we were the first, I sure hope were not the last, but for security sake I wont be telling anyone where it is. I'm sure though, that the local pilots would'nt have any trouble figuring it out any way.

We finally made it to camels this year its been almost 3 years to the day since I've flown here. It was my first mountain site. The trees were beautiful. We didn't make it up till late, about 5 O'clock.

Some one snuck a shot of me getting ready, I thought it was going to be colder up there but it really wasn't too bad.

I only got a few good bumps and did my and was able to only complete one full 360 in a thermal, it was a really nice one but I lost it pretty quick so I pretty much had a sled ride, but I really enjoyed it, the air was really calm and a very weak west wind as I came in to land, it was pretty smooth, My dad got more time, he was actually able to get above launch but not for long. we really got there to late in the day, next time we need to beup top before 2 or 3.

We did have a driver so it was nice to break down and not worry about having to go up to get the Jeep, It was a nice sunset. My camera is over 2 years old and had a good run but it just isn't working well any more, I missed a lot of good shots because of lens and battery failures but it does well enough I guess. Most important is just getting the air time.

Its a great LZ, Long and Flat and no bushes or sun flowers in the way. Chididisisimo.

Fuimos al "south side" en la tarde. condiciones estaban bien, más o menos fuerte con algunos "bumps" llegamos antes de las 2 pm. Habia otros pilotos pero no "Potty Pilots". Que Padre

Mi Papá voló primero so tuvo dos vuelos, pero estuvo bien, yo tuve 4 vuelos, Aterrizé primero a bajo y tuve que caminar hasta arriba, aterizé 2 vezes arriba y termine a bajo en casi no viento. mi papa tambien. Tuvé como 45 minutos de tiempo en el aire, y fui lo más alto que he ido jamas tambien, estuvo buenisimo por mi.

My dad Had 2 flights and I had 4, I landed twice above and twice below. I had one good 45 min. flight and got the highst I´ve ever been on the south side. by the time I actually got in the air most everyone else was leaving and I had all the air to my self which gave me a chance to really practice soaring. I enjoyed it. we tried to milk it as it died down and ended up breaking down down below as the Poty Pilots started to show up.

I took off first and went through some good bumps but turned in more sink and had a quick slaed ride. my Dad took off in a small cycle and got above launch an got in front of the towers, had a longer flight but didn't have his vario (he let me have) and had a harder time working the little lift. all and all a good day. I ran out of battery in the camera before I took off.

We set up a wind streamer in the Lz, it worked out pretty good.

My Brother Matt he was our driver for the day.

The wind in the LZ was North and we almost thought we weren't going to be able to take off, but up top it was still coming in east.

It was a little cross from the north, we were'nt sure he'd get off launch but there were too many people watching to disapoint them.

A cycle came in staight and he got up and above launch. he stayed up a little more than half an hour. it was a good flight for a late takeoff.

Volé el "south Side" de la topa 3 vezes, estuvo muy bien, llegamos como las 7 am, y habia un buen de parapentes y las conditiones estaban un poco debil pero como iba el dia, el aire vino más fuerte y llegaron más HG pilotos. Aún mi instructor Zippy estaba, estuvo chido.

I Flew the South side, I got 3 flights in off the top. it was pretty good conditions for doing some sled rides and practicing landing, It was cool to see my Instruction Zac Majors, and when the conditions picked up the paragliders cleared out and it was really good for the other HG pilots. There was one bad landing by Liz, she broke both down tubes and sratched her face, but besides having a mouth full of dirt she looked fine. amazing for how hard she fell.

Had to hike the glider up twice but it is always worth it.

Mira! Mi Papalote. se lo compré, lo unico malo es que esta rosa y morada, pero ni pex, puedo volar. ahora estoy libre de esta tierra, (pues por unos minutos jajaja)

In the background you can see Shawna, the one who sold me the glider, soaring with a bag.

Its so sweet to see two gliders on the Rack.

My Dad took off about an Hour after some Potty pilots as the wind changed from south to north. He got above Squaw Peak and then Cascade and above 1300 ft. Then tried to penetrate over to Timp but ran into to big sink and had to land early. Landed in the Orem Soccer fields. Was about a 4 hr flight.
